Keepin' It Weird In Austin

Austin is so full of unique people and places, yet as a 10+ year resident, I realize that I am not making the most of my time here! So, I'm starting a new journey and a new adventure! Exploring the city, and writing about it!

Spamarama

Who knew that a festival built around Spam could be so entertaining! Or that so many people would show up for it? Or that people could be so creative with Spam?

Thank goodness I was fasting! I wasn't tempted to taste anything! The display tables were unique and quite inventive! One table with chocolate dipped spam had a sign saying franchises were available. Another table had a sign spoofing Brokeback Mountain as Porkback Mountain. Another table had a "save a quail, shoot a Cheney" display. And the most elaborate display was making fun of Fema, and they handed out miniature play $5 bills with FEMA written across them.

It's kinda cool that Waterloo Park is the site of so many of Austin's festivals. Makes it easy to find and everytime you go there, you remember all the festivals attended.

A group of women named the "Sowpremes" performed...and some of the songs that they spoofed were hilarious.

I didn't get to see much of the Spam Olympics---the breaks between events were a little too long.

I'm very glad that I attended...apparently, it was the 28th Spamarama. I'll have to look later and see if anyone put any photos on Flikr.

Dedicated To The City I Love

I've lived in Austin since 1994 and well, this was the first year that I went to SXSW. And while walking downtown with all of the other visitors to Austin, I found myself feeling like a tourist. I was seeing, and feeling Austin in a whole new way!

So, I thought, why not create a blog about my new adventures? The city has grown so much, and it is so easy to get stuck in a rut and go to the same places over and over again, and never really try anything new.

A couple of years ago, in the Statesman, a woman decided to see many of the thing that tourists normally take time to see. That article stuck with me, and so here I am.

Not only will this give me a new appreciation, but it is also going to force me to get out of my comfort zone and try some new things, and probably meet some interesting people along the way!
